Join us for Syzygy of the Tides, an open studio event by Irish artist Kerrie O’Leary, developed as part of her S+T+ARTS Aqua Motion residency. Blending art, data and movement, Syzygy of the Tides explores the rhythms of the River Lima, the Atlantic Ocean and the cultural memory of Viana’s tidal mill landscape. Visitors are invited to step inside the artist’s process and discover how environmental data can be transformed into visual, sensory and site-responsive work.

Come explore how tides, technology and artistic practice can open up new ways of connecting with place!
Through collaboration with local scientists, energy historians, and residents, the artist will create a motion-based installation that responds to both historic tide data and speculative future energy flows. Archival research and interviews with those connected to the mill’s past—fishermen, engineers, and environmentalists—will inform the narrative. Using physical computing and machine learning, the sculpture will act as an evolving energy diagram, highlighting tensions between past ingenuity, current transitions, and future ecological responsibilities. It will be accompanied by workshops and storytelling events that involve local participants in reimagining energy resilience.
