AQUA MOTION: EU S+T+ARTS Residency, Viana do Castelo, Portugal
At a time when water scarcity, pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss are reshaping societies and ecosystems, AQUA MOTION supports artistic experimentation that engages with these challenges through collaboration with scientists, technologists, local communities, and water experts.

Through collaboration with local scientists, energy historians, and residents, the artist will create a motion-based installation that responds to both historic tide data and speculative future energy flows. Archival research and interviews with those connected to the mill’s past—fishermen, engineers, and environmentalists—will inform the narrative. Using physical computing and machine learning, the sculpture will act as an evolving energy diagram, highlighting tensions between past ingenuity, current transitions, and future ecological responsibilities. It will be accompanied by workshops and storytelling events that involve local participants in reimagining energy resilience.
