The Scenic Route

On view from 19th February to May, 2020

MOVING MEDUSAE

This interactive piece was inspired by Dorothy Cross’ diptych, Medusae II. Combining computer vision with Arduino the installation gives life to the jellyfish, engaging the viewer and drawing their attention to the issues of plastic pollution in our seas.

The shadows created from the projected plastics reveal how marine life see plastic underwater and can easily mistake them for food...

The computer vision detects movement in front of the webcam drawing additional tentacles that move in response to the direction of the movements. The colour of the graphics are determined by the level of brightness detected by the LDR. When it is bright, the graphics are white and navy. At dark the graphics are green and navy. If you are viewing this in daylight cover the LDR (next to the webcam) and watch the colours change!

SEA / SICK

I'm not homesick, I'm just missing the sea... After moving to London to do an MFA in Computational Art I realised how much I was missing the sea. Using wave data collected from the West Coast of Ireland, the corners of the fabric are tilted using micro-servos. The degree of rotation is determined by the wave heights and is connected to the fabric using invisible thread. The reflection of the fabric and the wave like motion hopes to connect people to the sea when they cannot physically get there. Ironically, this is now installed in The Corona Concept Gallery in Howth just metres from the sea.

The work on view will be changing from week to week and will include a series of paintings, installations and interactive pieces of art.

The first body of work on show is influenced by the series of lockdowns and 2km radius rules put in place last March. The eye catching shapes and bright colours contradict the depressing and claustrophobic reality of the pandemic. This juxtaposition of contrasts is much unexpected and provokes deeper contemplation.

The title of the exhibition is also a play on the theme of the work and Kerrie’s journey as an artist. After completing her undergrad in Management Science and Information Systems, Kerrie moved to New York. Working as a Gallery Associate, this was her first formal experience in the art world. Thriving on the creative energy of the artists she wanted more. In September, Kerrie was accepted to an MFA in Computational Arts at Goldsmiths University, London. This course is a perfect amalgamation of her background in computer programming and creativity. Due to covid Kerrie is back home in Howth studying online.
